2004 Awards for Magnificent Canon Storytelling

SATIRE/PARODY - KIDFIC

Stories in these categories by their nature depart somewhat from canon storytelling. They have not been judged by the same canon requirements as the stories in the main categories.

SATIRE - PARODY

SATIRE: For our purposes, satire is wit, irony or sarcasm in a Mag7 story aimed at mocking canon, fanon and/or common fanfic shortcomings/conventions to make them an object of laughter. We believe fanon and common fanfic foibles could do with a little lampooning once in a while.

PARODY: A Mag7 story in which the style of another work is imitated for comic affect.

We haven't been shy in our opinion about stories that reduce one or more of the Seven to children being raised by one or more of the others - they just aren't canon storytelling. Giving a child the name/coloring of a Mag7 adult, doesn't mean the child captures the canon characteristics of that adult. In fact, we rarely see any significant resemblance. Of course, that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the people who write and enjoy kidfic. It just means the stories aren't generally eligible for our canon storytelling awards.

The seven stories we've selected for our awards have been judged with the children viewed as original characters. They're part of our awards because we found them to be excellent canon storytelling about the adult characters. We have no doubts that should the kidfic community create its own awards, all the stories we've selected would be deemed award worthy in terms of characterization and literary merit. However, we recognize there are some excellent authors who are not represented here because their stories tend to be from the children's POV or center largely on the children. [

A LITTLE COMIC RELIEF

There are a lot of little, comical stories scattered around the Mag7 fandom - often based on an internet joke, an amusing news story, etc. Even the best of them are usually too light, too brief or too purposefully silly to have much to do with canon. The judges noted a few stories were truly funny but perhaps lacked the depth for canon storytelling awards. We decided to take the five that most tickled the judges and create a little comic relief award.
